What Is Luck?

What is Luck? Luck is a term I make popular among my students, and it is quite an interesting concept – if you can believe that! Luck is the feeling or state of being “undetected” by forces beyond your control, such as fate, accidents, and so on. It is a “state of being” that is far removed from our ordinary waking consciousness, but somehow, simultaneously connected to everything that occurs in our lives. “Lucky” is a word I coined, and it certainly brings chills down one’s spine when one considers the possibilities.

Luck is a powerful phenomenon and belief which define the entire experience of unlikely, positive, or negative events in life. The only thing about luck which is truly ‘unbounded’ is its ability to affect all aspects of human existence good and bad, bright and dark, healthy and unhealthy, old and young, rich and poor, friendly and enemies, religious or non-religious, high and low status, beautiful and ugly, successful and unsuccessful, etc. Luck truly is a force of nature beyond our comprehension, and yet, we all feel it working inside us all the time, influencing everything we do. It is like a wave with no beginning and no end, but all of its waves are bound to bring good luck and bad luck.

Although I say “good luck,” I don’t believe there is anything inherently ‘bad’ or ‘evil’ about being lucky. We all have the opportunity to be lucky. It is unfortunate that so many people see things in different lenses, often holding two view points on the same subject. You may feel lucky while other people around you may think you are unlucky.

Luck is indeed the phenomena that is outside of your control. But it does have some characteristics which we all have access to and can use to our advantage. Having a firm belief in “locks” (also called probability, chance, or necessity) will help you to stay focused on the outcome you want. When you look at something, take the time to analyze both sides of the coin, then make a decision. Having confidence in your ability to handle the outcome will help you to not be affected by negative or positive energies that surround you.

There are times when you can use “luck” to your advantage, such as having more friends, love, money, etc. If you see someone as being very lucky, then you may take advantage of this. But don’t let it cloud your judgment. You will want to be open to finding out the truth. Having a strong sense of self-worth helps you feel lucky, even if you haven’t had any luck in the past.

Having the desire to change things, can also be a way of ensuring good fortune. Sometimes things just aren’t going our way, but you keep at it anyway, hoping for the best. This attitude of persistence can pay off. The hard work may not happen right away, but eventually it will. Attitude and hard work are two elements of what makes up good fortune.
